Pangong Lake – Ladakh

Current Road Status to Pangong Lake: Open

This is one of the few endorheic basins in India. i.e. the water rarely flows as an outlet to another water body like a river, etc. This is also a saltwater lake which lies in India and China and no prize for guessing why it does not have any kind of marine life or flora habituating its waters. In fact, a line of control also lies within the lake. While this part of the review takes care of some hard facts about the lake, now comes the amazing magical part.
No visit to Leh can be complete without a visit to mesmerizing Pangong Lake.
The color of the lake reflects the sky at any point in the day. The water is always calm and peaceful with little gentle waves touching the shores silently. It's so still that you can hear your own breath when the man-made noise around you comes to a stop.

The best way to visit this place is to stay overnight as one then gets to see the lake in its various moods and times. In the afternoon under the blazing day sun, in the evening while the sun is setting, the early morning sun-rise. Each of these brings a different facet of this beautiful water body and should not be missed. Many camps are lining up the Pangong Tso and it's worth and its while to stay back at one of these.

Day Trip to Plan for Pangong Lake:
  • Leave Leh by 07.00 hrs
  • Have breakfast at Karu, just before the diversion to Pangong Lake. The main road goes to Manali via Hemis.
  • Reach Pangong by 12.00 noon
  • Have Maggie/thali at dhabas opp to Pangong and leave back for Leh by 14.00 hrs.
  • Reach Leh by 19.00 hrs.
You can complete Leh-Pangong-Leh in one day if you don't wish to stay overnight at Pangong. The lake is a beauty; However, after 3 idiots, they have kept many yellow scooters to entice tourists. Somehow, that was a put-off. The sound of waves hitting the lakeshore was amazing, nothing relaxes like nature.

The road from Leh to Karu is excellent, but once you take a diversion, it's mostly bad up to Tsoltak (after Chang La pass), the silver lining is that there is a clean washroom available at Tsoltak which is maintained by Indian Army, Rs 5 is charged per usage.

It's like God's own painting - that's the feeling you get when you reach this place. Hues of colors spread all around, not just the water, but the mountains as well change colors from place to place. The water of the lake itself shows up to 7 shades of water with every movement of the sun. You can just keep sitting on its shores and still cannot have enough of it. Besides the lake, the journey to the lake itself is amazing with streams of water flowing alongside. If you are lucky, you might even see a group of horses running beside you. If possible, make plans to stay one night here in the camps that are lined up on the shores of the lake.
